Rapid Graphing

I’ve given munin a try this weekend. What was really impressive is that, out of the box and with approx 15 mins of setup time, I’ve gotten more graphs of my environment than I used to have with cacti. What makes it even more nice is the fact that it’s agent/master based. During the installation of the agent (on debian/ubuntu), it will check the services that are running on the box and create the appropriate symlinks. After adding a couple of lines to the master munin config file, the agent gets polled, and all the defined plugins on the client will have corresponding graphs + html pages. Which makes it way easier (and less time consuming) than cacti. My current munin setup can be seen here.

And again, one nice bulk update… Blogging sucks ;P

Computer related:
* eth-0 was great :) I’ve met lots of nice new friends and haven’t been behind the computer all that much actually. The technical part I actually did is documented over here. Pictures can be found here.
* I’ve built a new fileserver. Since my old dell was pretty crappy, I’ve gotten a new motherboard + cpu + memory. The current configuration consists of an AMD64x2 @ 2.2GHz / 8GB ram / 4 x 750GB (mdadm raid5) / 80 GB OS disk. This machine peaked at about 560Mbit during eth-0, although this was with an usb2 attached 500GB disk. Unfortunately I’ve been a bit cheap with the storage controller, which is PCI based, and hence has an IO limit of approx 33MB/s :(
* Radio Random is back online \o/ You can tune in by clicking on this url, or visiting the link on the left. For even more fun and statistics, join #radio on irc.mononoke.nl.

Life related:
* Life’s Great :) Early this year I had this feeling that this would be a special and fun summer, and guess what, it is :) I’ve met lots of new people and visiting places all over the netherlands. I’ve finally found an agenda that works for me, and I’ve been busy ever since :)
* Jethro & Esther got married. During the celebration afterwards, I’ve met lots and lots of people from “vroegah”. It was really great to meet all those people, although you wonder how it came you’ve lost contact with them. And if I’m willing to restore contact. However, one person I’m definetely glad I’ve met again is Jeffie. Great to see you again dude :)
* Still wondering what else I’m going to come across during this nice and interesting walk from being a closed computernerd to being someone who actually lives :)
